Romanian railway modernisation project with Slab Track Austria

The Arges Bridge provided the opportunity to use state-of-the-art Slab Track Austria technology in Romania for the first time. This allowed PORR to offer significant added value to its customer Compania Nationalǎ de Cǎi Ferate CFR SA.

Reduced track maintenance requirements. PORR Construct in Romania has been commissioned to implement the major project to modernise the București Nord – Jilava – Giurgiu Nord – Giurgiu Nord Frontieră railway line. On the bridge over the Arges River between Vidra and Comana, a new slab track innovation co-developed by PORR was used instead of a traditional ballast track. This means that future track maintenance requirements can be reduced to a minimum while keeping high track quality. This helps save on maintenance costs and eliminates the potential track closures that would be required for track maintenance.

A total of 1,393m of PORR slab track will be installed as part of the modernisation. 340m of this will be on the first viaduct, 902m on the second viaduct, and 136m on the main bridge.

Additional added value. In slab track systems, derailment protection is integrated into the track slabs. This eliminates the need to use expensive steel guide rails on the bridge. The safety of future operations can be increased cost-effectively.

In addition, the prefabricated track support slabs of the slab track system are used as a foundation for rail expansion joints. The prefabricated system allows for easy on-site installation while maintaining high quality and accuracy for the support of the steel components.

The CFR railway authority has already granted system approval for the use of PORR’s Slab Track Austria technology in Romania.
